Flint’s illiteracy rate is double Michigan’s average and 21% of adults in Genesee County read at a first grade level according to a study in September 2013.These are some reasons why the E.A.G.L.E.S. (Expectations As God Leads Each Sister) Women’s Ministry of Vernon Chapel A.M.E. Church is hosting its first Literary Luncheon Saturday, May 16, 2015in the church’s Family Life Center, 5802 Dupont, Flint, MI 48505 at 12 p.m.
With featured speaker Dr. Kidada Williams, Historian and Associate Professor of History at Wayne State University and author of They Left Great Marks on Me, and invited guests from area women’s shelters, the ministry sees the luncheon as a start to bring literary awareness and tangible assistance to those who are in need. “We want to encourage and motivate the community and its organizations about the necessity of decreasing illiteracy statistics,”said the Rev. Sharon D. Moore, Founder of the E.A.G.L.E.S. Women’s Ministry. “We want to enlighten the African American community and other ethnic groups on this subject that affects all of us, whether we are the job seekers or the employers. This luncheon intends to foster a hope in those who have literacy needs.” Dr. Williams’ presentation will hopefully motivate all regardless of their literacy level. The Literary Luncheon is a microcosm of the greater vision of The Rev. Dr. Byron C. Moore, Pastor of Vernon Chapel. “A church is no more powerful than the service it renders to the community in which it sits,” is a passion stated regularly to the Vernon congregation by Pastor Moore.
Dr. Williams will present facts and statistics about the literacy of former slaves and African Americans in the post slavery era and their impact on the African American community.
Williams’ bookprovides a historical relationship to the current unrest in communities across America as we witness the cruelty of racial profiling and police violence.
Joining us as Mistress of Ceremonies is Mrs. Dawn Jones, ABC12 News Anchor/Reporter. The Literary Luncheon promises to be an afternoon of "Blessings and Breakthrough,” this year’s theme of the E.A.G.L.E.S. Women’s Ministry. The author's books will be available for purchase and signing immediately after the luncheon. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (810) 785-5721.
