Torrey Hill Intermediate School and Lake Fenton Middle School Win the Fourth Annual Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge

GENESEE COUNTY, MICH. – Torrey Hill Intermediate School and Lake Fenton Middle School students and staff have won the fourth annual Greater Flint Health Coalition Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge.

The Commit to Fit! Active Schools Challenge was designed to promote health and wellness within local schools while creating some “healthy” competition. Throughout the month of March, over 4,800 students from Genesee County schools strived to achieve 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Collectively, students from 35 schools across 15 districts in Genesee County logged over 4.7 million minutes of physical activity during the month.

The Active Schools Challenge had two competition categories, one for Elementary Schools and one for Middle/High Schools. This year over $5,000 in prizes will be awarded to the six winning schools to support school-based wellness activities year-round. The winning schools from both the Elementary and Middle/High School challenge are listed below.

The winning Elementary Schools are:

  1. Torrey Hill Intermediate
  2. GSRP Kiddie Time Childcare
  3. Hill Elementary

The winning Middle/High Schools are:

  1. Lake Fenton Middle School
  2. Woodland Park Academy
  3. Goodrich High School

Each winning school worked weekly to encourage students, teachers, and families to engage in physical activity both in and outside of the classroom. For coming in first place, Torrey Hill Intermediate School and Lake Fenton Middle School will also receive a trophy to display for the upcoming school year. All participants that reached the goal of 900 minutes of physical activity overall were entered into a raffle to win a variety of gift cards, skating passes, and more!

The Active Schools Challenge was generously sponsored by the Greater Flint Health Coalition, Hurley Foundation, Ascension Genesys Health Club, Oxford Bank, and Blanket Pro Insulation.
