Renowned Muralist and Flint native Hubert Massey Featured Exhibitor, Oct. 10 at St. Paul’s Art Walk
Most of his work is done on a grand scale. Meet Hubert Massey renowned fresco muralist as he presents an exhibit of his work at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 711 S. Saginaw Street,6-8:30 p.m., Friday, October 10, during the Greater Flint Arts Council’s monthly Art Walk.
“St. Paul’s is proud to be able to host an artist of Mr. Massey’s caliber as he shares his gift of art with the community,” said Audrey Stephens, church volunteer and coordinator for St. Paul’sArt Walk. “We invite the public to meet and greet Mr. Massey, enjoy refreshments and see the work of this renowned muralist.”
Massey's fresco, Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water, which is over 80ft. long, graces the lobby shop area of inside the Flint Institute of Arts. His outdoor mural Flint Vehicle City graces the side of the Odyssey House building, Carriage Town, in Flint on ML King.
Many of Mr. Massey’s works grace high-profile places in Detroit; the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Athletic Club, the Atheneum Hotel, and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History to name a few.
Massey, a Flint native who graduated from Beecher High School, received his Bachelor of Arts from Grand Valley State University. At Grand Valley he was a football player and discus record-holder.
After graduating from Grand Valley, Mr. Massey invested 12 years as a Pictorial Painter at Gannett Outdoor Sign Company.
Massey was commissioned by Grand Valley State University to create a fresco titled Importing and Exporting of Knowledge” which is housed in the Richard DeVos Building.
Among his acclamations are a Distinguished Alumni award from his alma mater, Grand Valley State University for significant achievements in his professional career, and April of 2013 he received an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Grand Valley. His work was recognized in 1993 by the National Society of Mural Painters
