Get Ready! Football Season Is Finally Here

A new coach, a new system, plus a couple of significant additions on the offensive side of the ball – that's what Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford has to work with this season.  After his team collapsed toward the end of 2013, the Lions are gearing up for a new season.

After missing the playoffs, the Lions fired coach Jim Schwartz and replaced him with Jim "Cool" Caldwell . This move set the tone for helping its franchise quarterback take another big step forward. In Caldwell, the Lions have an offensive-minded coach who worked with Peyton Manning in Indianapolis and Drew Brees as an assistant in New Orleans.

Detroit signed wide receiver, Golden Tate from the Seattle Seahawks and used its first round draft pick on tight end, Eric Ebron. Caldwell has promised to get Stafford's mechanics and consistency right. Stafford has to be on his game to make things happen. Despite throwing 29 touchdowns with 19 interceptions for last years 7-9 season, he struggled as the Lions lost six of their final seven games costing Schwartz his job.

The Lions were frequently among the most flagged teams for penalties under Schwartz. Schwartz was slow to criticize his players for such infractions. Caldwell is taking a different approach. " I think the majority of the one's we have are preventable, and that's what we'll work on". Many players have embrace his calm, cool and collected personality.

In the NFL defense wins championships and the Lions failed to address the issue in the secondary. Don't get me wrong it's great to see the Lions put up a lot of points on the score board, but to see other teams run up and down the field is not a pretty sight.  Aaron Rogers, Jay Cutler and other quarterbacks may be licking their chops when playing against the Lions secondary.

Despite all that, it's great that football season is finally here. Some have picked the Lions to win the division, others have picked them to finish last in a tough division in the NFC. Regardless of where they finish, the Lions will supply plenty of drama, you can always count on that.

For die hard football fans everywhere, there are five seasons in a year: winter, spring, summer, fall and football.  Every September calenders are adjusted, schedules are rearranged and "honey do" list are shortened (or put off). It's been a long summer. The wait is over. Are you ready for some football?
