GENESEE DISTRICT LIBRARY NAMES
ELIZABETH KISH AS NEW LIBRARIAN AT BEECHER-VERA B. RISON
April 6, 2015 – FLINT, Michigan The Genesee District Library (GDL) has named Elizabeth Kish as the new Beecher-Vera B. Rison librarian. Kish has been with GDL for seven years and previously served as a travelling library assistant and as a page.
“I want to make the Beecher library an active member of the community and help people empower themselves through finding and using the information they need,” said Kish. She also believes that libraries also function as a tool to help people sift through the deluge of information they are bombarded with every day.
Kish has a multi-faceted vision for the library system. “Public libraries need to be somewhere people can go when they need help finding important resources, but also where they can go to take some time to relax. The future of public libraries truly lies in our ability as library workers to use the resources at our disposal to help others.”
Funding is always a challenge for the library system, but it’s not the only challenge according to Kish. “Other challenges that I am concerned about are improving literacy, improving accessibility of materials and resources, and making sure that the library is meeting the wide variety of our community’s needs.”
“I enjoyed traveling as a library assistant because it gave me the opportunity to learn a lot from all of the amazing librarians and staff who work at the GDL,” Kish said. “But it is very nice to have my own place to call home!”
Kish holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from the University of Michigan-Flint and a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University.
