Flint's WBC champion Anthony Dirrell set to be honored at Michigan's State Capitol

FLINT, MI – World champion boxer Anthony "The Dog" Dirrell, a native of Flint, is finally starting to garner attention from civic leaders in positions of power.

Dirrell, the current WBC super middleweight champion, was honored by the Flint City Council and Mayor Dayne Walling on Monday, Sept. 22 — now Anthony Dirrell Day — and will get praised at Michigan's State Capitol building next month.

On Thursday, Oct. 2, Dirrell will arrive in Lansing around 9:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. Senate Session Meeting. The plan is to honor him on the Senate Chamber floor during their session meeting and on the House Chamber floor during their meeting where State Rep. Woodrow Stanley will present him with a tribute.

Anthony Dirrell's journey to becoming the WBC Super Middleweight Champion has been filled with setbacks and disappointments," Stanley said. "He never gave up and turned his setbacks into opportunities for comebacks. Our community is proud of his outstanding achievement. More importantly we are proud of his 'never give up' attitude."

He won his championship belt with a unanimous decision on Aug. 16 after beating former champ Sakio Bika in Carson, Calif

Dirrell was also celebrated at The Flint Journal office on Wednesday, Sept. 17 where more than 100 people showed up for a meet and greet with the titleholder.

Dirrell, 29, is undefeated as a professional with a record of 27-0-1.
